Flora - Fauna

Inside Thassos environment, many species of plants and a big variety of trees are hosted. The name Thassos is closely related to the word “forest” (pronounced “dasos” in Greek). Those forests, from the ancient ages, were a valuable source of income to the island. The honey based liquid of pine trees, and the flowers of koumaria, wicker, myrtle, oregano, and others, were a rich food for the honey-bees of the area, and the mountain Greece generall.

Furthermore, at Thassos, you can find the famous Cedar forest, which is located from Theologos to Kastro and Ipsario. At Ipsario, besides the fir trees, we can find a major variety of a rare tree called Itamos, also known as calm fir, or Karkaria. It is toxic and poisonous. The age of those threes located there, are considered to be more than 2000 years (perennial).
