NEW TREKKING ROUTES 2010!!

TREK 1:MARIES-KASTRO-THEOLOGOS

The first trek passes through some of the most famous sites of Thassos island. After a short transfer of 20k we start hiking from Maries village. After a 2km trek we’ll reach the Maries lake and continue trekking through the lake’s beautiful streams. We continue hiking uphill towards the deserted village Kastro (castle). There we’ll visit the old church of St Athanasios and the cemetery of Profitis Ilias, with the panoramic view of the area. Light lunch at the old tavern of the village before we continue downhill following the beautiful streams that pass through the large sycamores and the two waterfalls of Apostolon. Our route continues till Mantaloudi flatland and ends at the main street of Theologos village, the old capital of the region.

Total km: 17km. Approx 6- 7h

TREK 2: ARCHANGELOS MONASTERY TRIKORFON PEAK

A short transfer till the Archagellos Monastery, which is build at the top of a rock above the Aegean blue! Archagellos monastery, a women only monastery, is a part of the communion of Mt Athos monasteries. After a short visit, we’ll start our trek 2km from the monastery at the beginning of the gorge Livadi. It is an uphill trek till the rock formation of Ypsilanti. From there we continue our hike till the second highest mountain of Thassos “Trikorfon” at 825m alt. On the way back, we trek through pine trees following the old religious path of Archangelos monastry, where every year the locals carry the holy icon from the monastery to Theologos village and back through this specific path in the mountains! Transfer to Potos.

TREK 3:THEOLOGOS-PROFITIS ILIAS-POTAMIA

After a short transfer to Theologos village, we’ll start this day’s trek hiking till Profitis Ilias, with the marvelous view to the so called Golden beach. We continue our hike following the Kaggelia path, one of the stoniest paths of the island, used to connect the region’s capital Theologos village with the village Potamia. This downhill path passes by a spectacular landscape full of huge sycamore trees, some of the biggest in Thassos island, at the site called the Three springs. During the trek we’ll stop for a snack (lunch pack). We continue following the old path that will lead us to Potamia village.

Total km: 14, aprox 5-6h

TREK 4:POTAMIA-YPSARION PEAK-THEOLOGOS

We depart from Potamia village( 30km from Potos).The hike starts outside the village and ascents up to the shelter of the mountaineering club of Thassos at 922m. It than continues higher reaching the highest peak of the island, Ypsarion mountain at1204m.The view from the top is fantastic and allows you to see the whole island, including the cities of Kavala, Keramoti and even the island of Samothraki. We than start our descent through the breathtaking path of the cliffs of Ypsarion, passing above Profitis ilias church and ending up in the village of Theologos. Transfer to Potos.
Total km: 19, aprox 8 hours

Other smaller trekking routes are:

1.From Livadi beach (monastery Beach).starting under the bridge,to Stayri-Theologos.This a wild beauty trekking trail through a small gorge climbing up to Stayri between rocks,old stony hauses and olive trees!

2.From Theologos to Ypsarion Peak(1204m).This spectacular trekking trail starts from the midle of the ring road of theologos(marked with red paint) and climb up a stony old path till the top of the mountain.Then the trail is folowing all the diferents peaks till it gets to Ypsarion,the last and the highest peak of this trail.
